BCITO Pumping qualification update for 2025
BCITO has introduced new pump operator qualifications under the NZ Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4).
Two new strands have been added: Boom Delivery System and Line Delivery System.
This marks an important step forward in ensuring concrete pump operators are trained to a consistent, nationally recognised standard. These qualifications cover all key aspects of pump operation from safe setup and hazard identification, through to pumping, clean-out, and maintenance.
Operators who complete the programme will graduate as commercially competent operators, able to work unsupervised and meet industry expectations for safety, quality, and productivity.
What This Means for Industry
• Consistency: Operators across New Zealand will be trained to the same recognised standard.
• Safety: Training focuses on hazard awareness, safe setup, and correct procedures.
• Pathways: For the first time, pump operators can gain a formal apprenticeship-level qualification. This puts them on the same footing as other trades, making the industry more attractive to new people and giving existing workers a recognised career pathway.

Q. When will these qualifications be available?
A. BCITO is finalising the programme before the end of 2025 and hopes to launch it February 2026!!
Q. What’s the difference between the Boom and Line Delivery strands?
• Boom Delivery: For truck-mounted boom pump operators.
• Line Delivery: For pumps that deliver through hoses and pipelines without a boom.
Q. Can current operators get recognition for their experience?
A. Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) options are expected to be available.
Q. Do I still need a driver licence or site certification?
A. Yes. This qualification covers pump operation, not driving or site-specific certification.

Concrete Pump Operation Work-Based Programme Approved
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has approved the BCITO’s work-based learning programme to qualify concrete pump operators.
For the first time, workers in the concrete pumping industry will have access to a NZQA qualification. This will formally recognise the knowledge and skills required to become a professional concrete pump operator.
The approved programme leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4) with two new elective strands in:
- Concrete Pump Operation (Line Delivery System)
- Concrete Pump Operation (Boom Delivery System).
BCITO is preparing to launch the programme to the concrete pumping industry at the end of 2025.

BCITO Pumping qualification update for 2025
We continue to meet with industry to finalise the NZ Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4) for Concrete Pump Operators and discuss when it will be available.
Waihanga Ara Rau Workforce Development Council has added two Concrete Pump Operation strands (Boom and Line Delivery Systems) to the NZ Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4), which NZQA approved.
BCITO is updating the programme to offer these strands to learners.
After submitting the updated programme for endorsement and approval, BCITO will set up training processes for learners to earn the certificate.

Update about offering the NZ Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4) to Concrete Pump Operators
- Waihanga Ara has reviewed the NZ Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4) to include two Concrete Pump Operation strands in this qualification (Boom Delivery System & Line Delivery System), and NZQA approved it.
- BCITO is updating the relevant programme to be able to offer the Concrete Pump Operation strands to learners.
- BCITO will submit the updated programme to Waihanga Ara Rau for endorsement and NZQA for evaluation and approval.
- Once NZQA approves this programme, BCITO will be able to put in place the processes and systems required to support training on the job for learners to achieve the NZ Certificate in Concrete (Specialist) (Level 4) with strand(s) in Concrete Pump Operation.
